This month's blockbuster, Improper Conduct, is reviewed separately....
Another possible blockbuster, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, will play the CedarLee sometime in September. The dates are still uncertain. Directed by Hector Babenco and based on Manuel this film Puig's novel
stars Raul Julia as the Marxist Valentin, imprisoned as a revolutionary, and William Burt as the homosexual window dresser sentenced for corrupting minors. Occupying the same cell and eventually joining in a sexual act, the Marxist learns to be less macho and the homosexual learns self-respect.
Acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival, Kiss of the Spider Woman has drawn curiously mixed reviews in the American gay press. Pulling out all the publicity stops, the Advocate hails it as the gay film of 1985 and supplements its review with an interview of Babenco and a film comment. But Brian Walters in the Weshington Blade says that it confuses, bores and offends gay audiences. In the middle ground, some reviewers call it a good film but a flawed translation of Puig's novel to the
screen.
The central issue seems to be the film's conception of gay men as quasi-women who Spend their lives seeking sexual partners who are the real men they know they are not. Since real men prefer women, any man who might have sex with them cannot be
or
a real man. So they are doomed to suffer throughout their lives. Whether offered by gays (such as Proust, who expounded it at length) at us by gleefully thrown at us homophobes like Paulinė Kael, the concept is utterly homophobic, expressing hate for gays or gay self-hate.
In any case, we plan to see the film. Call Cedar-Lee for the date and times.
September 17, at 7 and 9:30 p.m., the Film Society presents Fellini's 1959 Satyricon, which includes a number of homosexual relationships. The film has a striking visual beauty and a great ending. But we are nonplussed by the Film Society's program notes, apparently written by an unusually naive male freshman who believes that "sexual decademce"--sex between males-symbolizes the collapse of the Roman Empire. He knows nothing about Roman sexual The young men in atyrican are no more bisexual than were most eminent males of pre-Imperial Rome including Julius Caesar and Marc Antony.
Cree.
This month the New Mayfield is showing All About Eve on September 14-15. Russo notes that the Eve Harrington character played by Anne Baxter was originally written as a lesbian, although the final film contains only two scenes sucgesting this possibility. Re also describes the character of the critic, played by George Sanders, as "subliminally gay."
